Completed in 2020, the recently built extension to The Gannochy Trust housing estate is a modern interpretation of A.K. Bell’s vision to provide healthy, affordable homes for the local community.
All 48 of the new houses and bungalows are red brick with slate roofs, have large windows to maximise light and are south facing. Each house has its own garden with a shed and space for growing. A unique feature of the new houses are the ‘sitooteries.’ These are special seating areas where tenants can enjoy the outdoors whilst sheltered from the Scottish weather. The houses all have enhanced ventilation and laundry rooms to help improve indoor air quality.
The new development has a mix of one, two and three bedroom homes. These are designed for the changing needs of people throughout their lives and can be easily adapted for accessibility needs.

The new development recently won the Large Residential Category and a sustainability accolade at the Glasgow Institute of Architects Awards in 2020. The new houses were praised for the quality of their design and for creating an ‘inclusive and resilient community’. The development also received two awards and a commendation at the Scottish Design Awards 2021, as well as winning the Affordable Housing Development Category at the Herald Property Awards 2021. It has been shortlisted for three awards at the Inside Housing Development Awards 2021.
